Blog-o-versary Vlog

This little ol’ blog turns SIX YEARS OLD tomorrow! And to celebrate, I have done as I promised and filmed my first-ever VLOG! Yikes! (but also… kinda fun…?)

Anyway, the vlog is me answering all of YOUR questions that you submitted throughout November, and since you guys sent in SO MANY awesome questions, AND since only like 2 of them had super simple answers… the vlog has been split up into 4 parts and I will post them throughout the month to make it a little more manageable both for myself and for anyone who bothers to watch them. *grin* This first installment is the longest of the four, because I was still trying to figure out what I was doing. The rest are shorter.

A couple of fun stats I thought I’d share about this blog:

My MOST VIEWED POST to date is Ring Around the Rose: Beauty and the Beast – which was a post I wrote when Five Enchanted Roses was releasing and it answers the questions: What are your thoughts on Beauty and the Beast? And what is your favorite version of Beauty and the Beast?

One of my LEAST VIEWED POSTS is Henry Fairchild and the Montague Caper – which is really kind of a shame because I thought it was pretty clever… I guess it doesn’t have much to do with fantasy, but still… it made me laugh several times when I was writing it. If you haven’t read that particular adventure of Mr. Fairchild’s, go give it some love. I think you’ll be entertained.

Not at all surprisingly, my Most Viewed Post THIS YEAR was the post where I opened nominations for this year’s Least Competent Henchman awards. I… had fun putting together the GIFs for that one.

Well, I guess I’ve stalled long enough, huh? Without further ado… my first vlog. *hides*

And for those of you like me, who don’t enjoy watching videos… here’s a TOC for you, so if there’s a question you just REALLY want to know the answer to, you can skip to that!

3:40 – What’s your favorite thing about being an author?

5:30 – What’s your least favorite thing about being an author?

7:45 – If you could take the place of one protagonist, who would it be, and would you do anything differently from them?

10:40 – Share a real-life adventure

16:55 – What are some of my favorite posts I’ve written on this blog?

18:39 – What is your best advice for balancing life/writing? How do you find time to write amidst the chaos?

I love your approach to reviews. You’re writing for the people who love your books. There are other books for the composers of those ogrish reviews. What a concept. And what a great perspective.

I also love what you said about prayer. You are so genuine and authentic in sharing your need for guidance, patience, wisdom, inspiration, etc. But you use that to point yourself towards God, which is exactly what a child of God should do, run to their Father and ask for help.

Also, your laundry chute story was hilarious. Amazingly I have a laundry chute story of my own, only I was older (8 or 9), bigger, the chute much smaller, and I got stuck and my sister had to call my Mom (who was at work) and say, “Mom, DJ got stuck in the laundry chute and he can’t get out.” May we never lose that adventurous spirit. In part, I think that’s what makes us want to write, to go down the laundry chute and explore the mysterious worlds in the basements of our imaginations!

It’s what I try to keep in mind when I get a negative one. I can’t say I’m always perfect at it, certainly there have been reviews/responses that have sent me into a downward spiral… but I do try.

Heheh, awwww!!! I am still amazed none of us ever got stuck, it really must have been an abnormally large laundry chute! Ooh, I like that analogy! “the mysterious worlds in the basements of our imagination…” that’s fantastic!

:) I like to activate the plugin every December :) I used to do it because I lived in NC and missed snow… so I figured, at least I could have it on my blog! Now I do it because habit (as I live in WI and have PLENTY of real snow) and because it feels all cozy and wintry. Glad you enjoy it!

I’m super late but HAPPY BLOGOVERSARY!!!!!!!!! I love your blog so much and it’s been such a joy getting to know you!

The vlog was so very fun. Cimorene is a PERFECT choice for my question. Being her is seriously #GOALS

Oh my goodness, the laundry chute story was gold. I was grinning and giggling the whole time. XDDD Ya gotta love those adventures from childhood.

“TORNADO PEOPLE.” <—My fave. XDDD But more seriously, your thoughts on prayer were absolutely beautiful. I try to make a habit to pray before every writing session, but I shamefully often forget. But on those days I remember, the writing always goes smoother. It's the most amazing thing to think about how God truly does care about us and our creative pursuits and all the little details of our lives. He is an awesome God! Your words touched me so much! Thank you for sharing that. <3

Thank you for ALL of this. This was so much fun to watch and to get your insight on all these questions. I look forward to the next part!

CHRISTINE!!! *tackle-hugs* You have such a gift of encouragement, your comments always brighten my day!

Cimorene is so fun. I love her to bits!

Hehe, thanks :) I have so many fun cousin-adventures. I should tell more of them. Future vlog-ideas!

I’m glad you enjoyed my Tornado People idea. I’ll bet I could sell that in Hollywood… yup.

We have an amazing, creative, Creator God, and I don’t always remember to pray before I write, either. But I definitely notice a difference when I remember, and I love that He has given me a desire to emulate His creativity and that He CARES about what I put in my epic fantasy or steampunk fantasy adventures.

You are welcome! Thanks for submitting great questions!

ACK, I loved seeing your face!! This was a lovely vlog!! You’re such a natural in front of the camera! ^_^ I really love your answer about bad reviews. You have such a great attitude about it, and I couldn’t agree more with you. There will always be people who won’t like what you do, but there are also people who will like it, and you shouldn’t focus on the others. :) I can’t wait to watch your next video!

Awwww, thanks!!! :) I was super nervous about not having my answers all written out beforehand, but I wanted it to feel more like an actual conversation. Glad that came across.
