Poetry Corner: Five Year Old Gardening

Five-Year-Old Gardening 4-24-02When the rain endsthe white dandelions– tufts of fluff –begin to stretch out againpeeking their eyes opento make surethe rain is gone.I wait, patiently curiousuntil the sun has dried them out, then I snatch up the weedand blow,so hard that I need to gaspagain for breath. The tiny bits of flower float offdancing merrily away from me.I am satisfied.I have helped momwith the weeding.I return to my play, never suspectingthat I have just plantedtwenty-five new weeds.~Jenelle Schmidt
