Silmaril Awards 2023: Time to Vote!

What a whirlwind of a week it’s been!

Y’all sent 45 dragons descending on my house. Forty-five. Even with British sci-fi technology helping out, it’s been a bit of a tight squeeze. Some of these dragons bring a rather enormous amount of ego along with them, which doesn’t help it feel any less cramped. They also have very particular needs and demands… er… requests. Several of them have started hoards in various corners, and there are… rather a lot of little bonfires that have been started in various places. I’m really hoping that the fireproofing that came with the whole package I ordered to make the basement spacious enough is actually working, or my husband is NOT gonna be happy when he gets back from his business trip!

Oh, excuse me a moment…

“No, Julio! You cannot go FWOOMING around the upstairs, it hasn’t been fire-proofed!”

“But I am a dragon, and I go FWOOM!”

“Not in my living room!”

Ahem.

I’m back. Oh dear, hang on a second…

*crashing sounds and breaking glass*

“Stop! King Tellemyack, can you help out here, please?”

Sorry about that. Beowulf’s Dragon and Life-in-Death just started arguing about something and that can get messy real fast.

How about I just tell you about the finalists quick and then you can go vote for them?

With 14 nominations, we have Julio Aquino…

FWOOM!

“Thank you, thank you! I am being so pleased to be accepting of this award…”

“Um, no, Julio, you’re not… this isn’t the awards ceremony. You haven’t won…”

“Again? I have not won again?”

“Well, you haven’t won… um… yet? This is the finalists’ round. You are a finalist, but the fans still have to vote!”

“I am a finalist! I am always a finalist!” A young man with a handsome face dances into view… then just as suddenly hangs his head and slumps. “I am always a finalist.”

I pat him a bit awkwardly on the shoulder. “Well, perhaps this is your year. You never know. You did get the most nominations!”

He mumbles something in a dejected tone and wanders away… however, a moment later my encouraging words appear to sink in for he suddenly morphs into a large dragon and wings away happily roaring, “FWOOM! THIS COULD BE MY YEAR!!!!”

Oh boy.

Anyway, you just met Julio. He is from Kyle Robert Shultz’s Afterverse series. He is a rather incorrigible dragon, with a lot of power and a somewhat… um… tempestuous amount of confidence? But he’s got a heart of gold.

With 12 nominations, we have Yurgen, a sea dragon from Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga. Ancient and wise and ferocious, Yurgen is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Be careful to never get on his bad side, for he will hold a grudge for centuries.

With 8 nominations, we have Shardas, a truly majestic dragon from Jessica Day George’s Dragon Slippers trilogy. Shardas has the heart of a lion and is as steadfast and loyal as they come. He also loves collecting stained glass windows.

Also with 8 nominations, we have Kazul from Patricia C Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Kazul can always be trusted to do the right thing. She is a deep source of wisdom. She is also exceedingly pragmatic and no-nonsense for a dragon.

And finally, with 7 nominations, we have Falkor from Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story. Honestly, Falkor’s arrival is probably the only reason my house is still standing. As he is fond of saying, “Having a luck dragon with you is the only way to go on a quest.” When facing villains of any kind, I can think of no one I’d rather have on my side than Falkor!

*epic crashing and roaring sounds*

Oh dear, I’m sorry… I have to run. If this is how they’re behaving now, I shudder to think of what the awards ceremony will be like… um… so, you can go straight to the voting form now, or you can head to the other blogs and read up on the other finalists in each category. May the best characters win!
