Meet the Turrim Cast: Dalmir

Art by Chloe Grace

With the release of book 1 just 15 weeks away, I thought it might be time to start introducing the characters you’ll meet in this series.

The very first character you meet is Dalmir.

He’s not necessarily the person you’d choose to have as your door-greeter… especially at this particular point in his life, as he’s quite depressed at the moment. In fact, he’s all but given up on the world at large in general and himself specifically.

But don’t be fooled! Just because he’s in one of those crazy things called “THE PROLOGUE” don’t worry… he’s in the actual story, as well. The prologue just takes place a wee bit before the main story starts… but Dalmir is important enough to be mentioned right at the outset.

Also… I Just like prologues, okay?

When I was in college, I found out that my dad skipped prologues in books. I… could not quite come to terms with this shock… and thus… I decided to make certain that the book he had commissioned me to write had a prologue… just so he would have to read it!

But seriously, prologues are cool.

I have gotten off topic.

Anyway, this is Dalmir.

He is a massive hermit and lives all alone in a tower on the outskirts of a tiny town called Dalsea in the country of Dalma just on the western side of the Telseren Grade mountain range. He hasn’t interacted with anyone in a very long time and he’s in a perpetual bad mood. Life has not been kind to Dalmir, and he feels ill-used by the world at large. The people of the village have never seen him and nobody knows he’s up in that weird tower… most folks don’t think about the tower much. In fact, they’d prefer it if you changed the subject to something more interesting, like the height of wheat this time of year, or which farmers will have the best cows in the Harvest Festival this year.

In our first encounter, we do get a glimpse of something “other” about this character. With a snap of his fingers he brings the dying fire in his hearth back to life. But he does it so quickly and so off-handedly that we’re not sure we saw what we think we saw. Does this enigmatic old man have strange powers? We’re not sure.

However, before we leave him to his brooding, you notice something glittering on his rustic table. You edge closer to get a better look, because the flickering blue orb resting on the rough boards looks so very incongruous in this setting. About the size of a large marble, the gem gleams with an otherworldly cerulean light. Mesmerized you lean closer… closer…

“Don’t touch that!” the old man snaps, and you straighten suddenly.

“Sorry,” you say. Questions burn in your mind and on the tip of your tongues but the dark glower he is aiming at you quickly puts those questions to rest. You will wait to find out more.

Didn’t ChloeGrace do such an amazing job with this character sketch? I love it to pieces. You can see more of Chloe’s artwork HERE.
