My Nightstand Books: Confession Time
So, a few years ago, DJ Edwardson and I started this recurring meme idea of posting a picture on the first Wednesday of each month of all the books we planned to read that month. Like all of these amazing brainstorm ideas (Silmarillion Awards, Six Degrees of Kool Books) it was mostly DJ's idea. Ever since, I've been semi-faithful about posting a picture of the books I'm currently working on, and it's been great fun. (Don't worry, this isn't a post about how I'm giving up on the Nightstand Books meme... it's a great meme, a wonderful built-in monthly blog post idea, and I can't not read, so this is not a confession of how I'm giving up books cold-turkey or anything!)However, this Nightstand Books thing has had a bit of an unexpected side-effect, though it isn't entirely to blame. No, my friends, it cannot take all the blame. Also sharing the burden of this blame for what I am about to share with you are things like The Fellowship of Fantasy: Indie Book Club, and Realm Makers, and the Clean Indie Fantasy discussion group. You see, over the past two years, I've started accumulating books at a much higher rate than ever before. What with new authors to read, a book club I'm actually enjoying and actively participating in, conferences where I have actually MET a lot of these authors in person, winning giveaways, a couple of birthdays and Christmases passing, and my extreme preference for actual books made out of paper... something daunting has occurred. You ready for this?I'm sure this is small potatoes to some of you....But it's kind of a major thing for me.My stack of OWNED/UNREAD books has gotten SLIIIIGHTLY out of control.Yeah.While only one of these is actually SITTING on my current month's nightstand (Spicebringer by H.L. Burke) all of these are "on" my nightstand, as in, they are at the top of my TBR pile. And that's a bit overwhelming. In my entire life, I've never EVER owned so many books that I've never read. Usually, I don't buy books until I've read them... the library has always been my best friend. But with being in so many Indie-Author groups and things, not as many of these are available in the library.Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! This is a fantastic "problem" to have! But it does make me a little tired when I look at them all lined up like this. And it also has this terrible side-effect of making me really want to go to the library to pick out a stack of books. LOLBut here's the deal. I'm not allowing myself to buy any more books until I've read ALL of these. And I'm not allowed to get books out of the library, either. This is serious.41 books.I can do this.I'm looking forward to it. These are all books I am very excited to read. It's going to take some time (no, I cannot read all of those before the next Nightstand books day rolls around... I don't think I could have even done it during a summer in high school when I had nothing better to do... maaaybe.... I did read 60 books in 3 months that one year, and a good 5 of them were Wheel of Time books, which are like 2-3 times the size of most other books. All of the other 55 books were over 200 pages long... so... maybe). What about you, dear Reader? What's on YOUR nightstand?! Any of these books look fun to you? Have you read any of them? Let me know in the comments which ones I should get especially excited about!
