WHAT'S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?
My author-friend D.J. did a post like this a week or so ago, and I thought it was a great idea, so I'm stealing... er... borrowing the idea. You can read his post here. So, what books are currently on my nightstand? Well, right now my to-read pile is stacked pretty high. (And when it gets this big, the majority of the books are usually relegated to the floor next to my nightstand to make room for things like headphones and glasses of water and extra phone handsets... I'm not sure about the why of that last one, but it happens). So, yes, obviously the below photo is more than a bit staged.Anyway, the picture:
Alrighty, from the top down on the right-hand side of the picture:
Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis - this is the book we're currently reading out loud as a family. Derek has been working his way through The Chronicles of Narnia and Leiana seems to really be enjoying them. Yay!
The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander - this is the first book in the Prydain Chronicles, a childhood favorite. I am going to start re-reading them so as to refresh my memory on them as well as to add reviews of them to my "recommended reads" page.
Dragon and Thief by Timothy Zahn - recently saw this at the library and had to pick it up. I love Timothy Zahn, and did not know he had any Young Adult books out... so I'm interested to read this and see what it's about!
Auralia's Colors by Jeffery Overstreet - it seems everyone is raving about this series recently, so I had to give it a try. It's taken me about 100 pages to really "get into" the story, but it's starting to get interesting.
Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm by Philip Pullman - I grabbed this from the library in order to do some research into the original version of Cinderella, but then remembered how much I love reading fairy tales, so I renewed it and am re-reading some old favorites. The original versions are quite a bit different than the newer ones you can find in story-books for children, it's quite interesting - I knew that the old versions were darker (I've read some of them before), but a lot of the details are different, too.
Ember Flame by Kaycee Browning - a book by a dear friend of mine (and Leiana and Nathalie's babysitter) and I know that the sequel is coming out soon-ish, so I want to refresh my memory on the first story before I read the sequel! Yay!
Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Carson Levine - a book I got out of the library to read with Leiana. :) She's into Tinker Bell lately.
Death Star by Michael Reeves - I have quite a soft spot for Star Wars books (okay, Star Wars-anything), and this is one I haven't read yet, so I'm excited to get around to it...
As you can tell, the books are stacked in order by size, not in order by which ones I'm reading first.
On the left-hand side of the picture you can see my notebook. This is always on my nightstand so that I can jot down ideas I have before I fall asleep (ideas are pesky like that), or can grab it while I'm writing so I can refer to any notes I've made about the current story I'm working on.
The spiral bound thing is my completed Cinderella Retelling (I printed it off so my husband could read it and make editing comments more easily... that's not the draft that got submitted, though).
And finally, my computer. That's where the worlds and characters get created and brought to life, my friends.
So, now that you've seen my nightstand reading list (albeit cleaned up and arranged nicely for my guests)... what books are on YOUR nightstand?
P.S. Tomorrow night I have my very first official speaking engagement as an author. I'll be talking about how/why I became an author and reading an excerpt from my book at the Xi Zeta Homeschool National Honor Society with a panel of two other artists. If you think of it, would you send up a prayer for me? I'm very excited, but also just a tad bit nervous.
